Congratulations Jess / Miss Preggy

My gorgeous and super strong friend Jess gave birth to her beautiful and perfect son, Aiden last night. I am so proud. I've been following her blog since the beginning of her pregnancy and I have loved getting to know her and watch her grow and transition in to motherhood. Go read her blog for the whole story and to get to know more about this very special girl. Congratulations Jess. You have no idea how awesome you are.

Graeme's first lamp. DONE.

These amazing pictures by Paul Clark

Boys that I used to be in love with.

Best book launch. EVER.

I was invited to the very most delicious book launch this morning at the Houghton Golf Club. It was for a cookbook called Savour that has totally set the bar for local cookbooks.

The photography, by Vanessa Lewis is just amazing. The chef is Estelle, and the writer is Karen. Here are some pictures from the launch. I'm getting the book, and I'll post pictures of that too. The book is so pretty, I'd have to hide it away from the kids for good. Really.

I'm getting older (27 now... DAMN) and I have noticed that things aren't as erm.. firm as they used to be. I've been skipping on and off for a while, but yesterday I hit it... hard.

Skipping really is a lot harder work that I thought it was. I had to stop like 7 times to catch my breath. Today, my thighs, calves, stomach and my arms are really sore. It's a nice pain. It's a "I've worked out" pain. I like it.

I got me some new stuff

My best friend, Bethany.. sent me some really awesome stuff from the States (of America). I LOVE ceramics. She got me this really nice set of cups -but they double up as measuring cups for baking & cooking. They're so pretty. The half cup one is my new tea-drinking-cup. Man I get excited over new things!!! And parcels. Just anyone that thinks of me makes my heart beat fast.

I really, really love this mother goose ashtray. I bought two of them at a second hand shop. They were like four rands each. They look like something my grandmother would have in her house... if she smoked, which she doesn't. But still. I really really like them.

That same second hand shop in Cape Town (Munroe's in Observatory) has this big box of photographs, greeting and postcards. They all have the original messages and stuff on them. I found two old pictures of someone's babies. I know that the shop purchases the deceased's estates.. so this poor person had nobody to pass their memories and photographs on to. So I will keep and treasure these pictures for them. I have a bunch that I've collected over the years.

I have a label.

So everyone knows how much I dislike "labels" or being a conformist that way. But I went to the "You, me and everybody we know" Night Market last night and had to buy this dress. In fact I wanted to buy at least 7 dresses from that stand, but my wallet said no. Sitting Pretty is SO ME!! I could buy all my clothing there, forever, and never go anywhere else. Ever. That's how nice it is.

Don't read this. I felt it was my duty to repost it. But don't read it.

I just read a comment from a 2004 article by the NY times about the loneliest whale in the world. scientists have been tracking her since 1992 and they discovered the problem:
She isn’t like any other Baleen whale. Unlike all whales, she doesn’t have friends. She doesn’t have a family. She doesn’t belong to any tribe, pack or gang. She doesn’t have a lover. She never had one.
Her songs come in groups of two to six calls, lasting for five to six seconds each. But her voice is unlike any other Baleen whale. It is unique—while the rest of her kind communicate between 12 and 25hz, she sings at 51.75hz. You see, that’s precisely the problem. No other whales can hear her. Every one of her desperate calls to communicate remains unanswered. Each cry ignored. And with every lonely song, she becomes sadder and more frustrated, her notes going deeper in despair as the years go by.

Sally Mann

My friend Claire knows me better than anyone else. I suspect it is because our hearts are carbon copies and she knows if the is affected by something, then I will be too. These images in particular, had a huge impact on me. I think a brilliant photographer is one that brings out emotion with their art. These pictures made me feel so awkward and uncomfortable I could barely look at them. I am a bit shaken and haunted by them.

I dug a little deeper. I really just wanted to know her motives behind producing images of this nature. Turns out, the three young kids she used most were her own children. Her books sparked incredible outrage. The NY Times said, “Probably no photographer in history has enjoyed such a burst of success in the art world."

The main themes of her work is supposed to be family, but others touch on darker themes such as insecurity, loneliness, injury, sexuality and death. She received accusations of child pornography.

Mann herself considered these photographs to be “natural through the eyes of a mother, since she has seen her children in every state: happy, sad, playful, sick, bloodied, angry and even naked.”
Critics agreed, saying her “vision in large measure is accurate, and a welcome corrective to familiar notions of youth as a time of unalloyed sweetness and innocence,”

I don't know. Take only what you need from it.
